organizations. This guide lays out what the actual data says, clearly
attributed to its source and year, rather than blending figures from different
studies together.
01 Understanding TCO
TCO is a financial metric
capturing the complete cost of acquiring, deploying, supporting, and operating

The often-cited "$843
savings, 336% ROI, $101.3 million NPV" trio comes from the 2021 M1-update
study, a three-year analysis released shortly after Apple Silicon launched. It
is not the same as the most recent (2024) Forrester study, which found:

million, adding up to a net present value of $49.4 million and an ROI of 186%,
with payback in under a year.

Forrester's 2024 study grouped

summing to $131.4 million):

staffing advantage.

04 Productivity
The 2024 study introduced
specific, measurable productivity figures: employees saved about 45 minutes per
month on device startup and updates, and about 55 minutes per month on issue
investigation — a combined 100 minutes per month, which Forrester translated
into a 3.5% overall productivity gain once fully burdened salary costs were
applied.
(The
blog's "100 minutes/month" figure is accurate — it's one of the few
numbers in the original draft that matched its source correctly.)
05 Security
Security findings evolved across
study years and are often overstated when compressed into a single headline
number:
The 2019 study found roughly a
50% reduction in breach risk per Mac deployed, translating to about $1.5
million in avoided costs over three years.
The 2024 study found a 15%
reduction in general external-attack risk, and separately, a 90% reduction in

IBM's Mac@IBM program is
separate from the Forrester studies and is frequently the most misquoted
source. Here's what IBM's CIO office actually reported, by year:
2015 rollout: with roughly 1,900
Macs deployed per week, one help-desk staffer supported about 5,400 Mac users,
versus one staffer per 242 PC users at that time.
2019 research: seven engineers
supported 200,000 macOS devices versus 20 engineers needed for the same number
of Windows devices (a ~2.86:1 ratio, described by IBM as a 186% increase in
support staffing needed for Windows).
2016 update: IBM reported saving
$273–$543 per Mac versus a comparable PC over a four-year span.
2019 research also found only 5%
of Mac users contacted the help desk, versus 40% of PC users; 27% of PC issues
required in-person help versus 5% for Mac.

Separately, Cisco — whose CIO
Fletcher Previn also ran IBM's Mac program — reported in 2023 that sales teams
using Mac saw a 10.9% increase in bookings and a 9.9% acceleration in deal
closure, and engineers on Mac produced 11.5% more code output. These are
Cisco-specific, self-reported internal figures, not part of the Forrester
studies.

07 Licensing, Deployment, and Built-In Security
These structural points don't

The 2024 blog's reference to
breach costs was accurate: IBM's 2024 Cost of a Data Breach Report, based on
Ponemon Institute research across 604 organizations, found the global average
cost of a data breach reached $4.88 million in 2024, a 10% increase over 2023
and the largest year-over-year jump since the pandemic.

09 Figures That Could Not Be Verified
Being transparent about the
limits of this fact-check — the following claims from the original draft are
plausible but could not be confirmed against a primary source, so they should
be treated as unverified rather than cited as fact:

data — consistently find Mac fleets can produce support-cost savings, higher

Windows deployments, despite a higher upfront hardware price. That is a real,
multi-source pattern.
But the specific numbers matter,
